Vovinam's belt promotion tests consist of a martial arts skill test as well as an oral examination which  is used to test  student's moral characteristics and integrity.  As the student's martial arts skills increases so must his moral characteristics.  Below are examples of basic questions that beginners of 1 and 2 stripes should know.

   The reason it is called Vovinam is to make it easy to remember, read, and write and to differentiate it with other martial arts style in Vietnam.

5. What is the meaning of the greeting in Vovinam? It is the iron hand on the heart of good will.

6. Define the meaning of Viet Vo Dao.

   Viet = Vietnam country and its people

   Vo = Art of self defense

   Dao = Way of life of philosophy.

7. How many belt levels are there in Vovinam? 4

   1. Light blue (color of the uniform) = does not classify as a true belt.

   2. Blue

   3. Yellow = equivalent to black in Taewondo.
