The Meaning of Each Belt in Vovinam
Viet Vo Dao
Ocean Blue Belt: It is the same color as the uniform, which
represents the hope of youth. It identifies student as an entrance-level beginner.
After successfully completing the entrance level, which is about six months,
students are eligible to participate in a test to be promoted to the sky blue belt
ranking.
Sky Blue Belt: This belt ranking has three levels. Yellow
stripe is used to indicate that the martial arts is penetrating into the skin. Each
level requires an average of six months and is identified by one stripe running
tranversely against the belt length.
Yellow belt: The yellow belt indicates an intermediate ranking.
One who earns a yellow belt can become an instructor. The yellow belt also
has three levels, each identified by a red stripe. The red stripe denotes that the
art is absorbed into the blood.
Red belt:
Preliminary Red Belt: After successfully passing the third yellow
belt, one is awarded a preliminary red belt. It consists of a red belt with two
longitudinal yellow stripes along the edges of the red belt.
Primary Red Belt: It indicates master ranking. The red
belt has seven levels, each represented by a white stripe transversely located on the red
belt. The white stripe illustrates that the art is continually penetrating into the
body to the bone marrow.
White Belt: There is only one white belt in Vovinam and it is
specifically reserved for the Master Chairmain. The white belt is the highest symbol
empowering the excellency of the Master Chairman of Vovinam Viet Vo Dao.
